New Zealand is a popular study destination for Korean students — from short English courses to university degrees. Visa rules and provider lists change, so use this as a map and confirm specifics on Immigration New Zealand (INZ) and the NZQA provider register.
The pieces that have to line up
- An approved provider. A student visa is tied to enrolment with an education provider approved to take international students. Check the provider on NZQA.
- Help with the application (optional). Korean-speaking study abroad and education agents can help with choosing a school and preparing the enrolment. New Zealand has no official register of education agents — the Education NZ Recognised Agency scheme ended in 2023 — and paid advice on the visa itself requires an Immigration Advisers Authority licence.
- The right visa. Most full-time study needs a student visa; some short courses can be done on a visitor or working-holiday visa. Confirm on INZ’s visa finder. For how the student visa sits alongside the work, resident, and other pathways, see NZ visa basics.
- Funds & insurance. You’ll usually need to show tuition, living costs, and appropriate insurance. Confirm the current figures on INZ.
Work rights while studying
- Many student-visa holders can work limited hours during term and more during scheduled breaks — but the conditions are specific and change. Read your visa conditions; don’t assume.
- If you work, you’ll need an IRD number and the right tax code — see IRD numbers and tax basics.
After you arrive
- Bank account: Opening a New Zealand bank account.
- Settling in: Your first two weeks in New Zealand.
- Healthcare: understand your cover and how to enrol with a GP.
