New Zealand Working Holiday visa: a starter guide for Koreans

The Working Holiday visa lets eligible young Koreans live, travel, and work in New Zealand for up to 12 months. Rules, quotas, and dates change every year, so treat this as a map — Immigration New Zealand (INZ) is the single source of truth. New to the system? The basics

• Who: Korean citizens generally aged 18–30, applying from Korea. It’s normally a once-in-a-lifetime visa.
• Quota & timing: Korea’s allocation is capped and opens for applications on a set date each year (historically around April–May), first-come, first-served until the cap is reached. Check the exact date on INZ before the window opens.
• What you’ll need: a valid passport, proof of funds for your stay, and onward-travel evidence (or funds for it). A medical check may be required. Confirm the current figures and document list on INZ.

Work and study limits

• You can work for most employers, but there are limits on how long you can stay with one employer and on study duration. Read the current visa conditions — don’t rely on old forum posts.
• If you want to study English within that limit, Korean-speaking study abroad and education agents can help you find and enrol in a course. Enrolment help is a separate thing from visa advice: paid advice on the visa itself requires an Immigration Advisers Authority licence.

Your first two weeks (sort these early)

• Apply only through the official INZ website; beware agents “guaranteeing” a spot.
• The cap can fill fast — have your documents ready before the window opens.
