Enrolling with a GP and how NZ healthcare works

A GP (general practitioner) is your first point of contact for most non-emergency health needs. Enrolling matters — it usually makes visits cheaper.

Enrol with a GP

• Find a clinic taking new patients and enrol. Enrolled patients (with a qualifying visa/residency status) generally pay subsidised fees; casual visits cost more.
• Eligibility for publicly funded health services depends on your visa/residency — check the criteria.
• Many Korean-speaking clinics exist in Auckland; see the directory’s clinics category.

Day-to-day

• Prescriptions are issued by your GP and filled at a pharmacy (chemist).
• After hours / urgent but not life-threatening: use an urgent care / accident & medical clinic, or call Healthline 0800 611 116 (free, interpreters available).
• Emergencies: dial 111 for an ambulance.
