In NZ, anyone giving immigration advice must be licensed by the IAA, paid or not, unless they are exempt, as lawyers are. Here's how to verify that before you pay.

Immigration is high-stakes, and unlicensed “agents” are a known risk for migrant communities. The single most protective thing you can do is check the licence before you pay. Not sure which visa you need yet? Start with NZ visa basics, then come back to choosing an adviser.
The rule
Anyone who gives NZ immigration advice must hold a licence from the Immigration Advisers Authority (IAA), whether or not they charge for it, unless they are exempt. The main exempt group is NZ lawyers with a current practising certificate (regulated instead by the Law Society). Informal help from family or a friend is also exempt, as long as it is not given regularly or for a fee.
How to check, in two minutes
- Licensed adviser? Search the public IAA register via iaa.govt.nz (the Immigration Advisers Authority). Confirm the name, that the licence is current, and its conditions — or scan the QR code on the adviser’s digital licence certificate.
- A lawyer instead? Check the NZ Law Society register — lawyers can give immigration advice without an IAA licence.
- Neither? Walk away. Taking paid advice from an unlicensed person is a red flag and may put your application at risk.
Questions worth asking
- What is your licence number and are there conditions on it?
- What’s quoted in writing — fees, what’s included, and what’s not?
- Who actually files my application, and how will we communicate?
