Schooling is overseen by the Ministry of Education. Most children attend their local state school, and enrolment zones often decide which one.
The basics
- Children can start school at age 5 and must be enrolled by 6. School years run roughly February to December.
- State schools are organised into enrolment zones: living in-zone usually guarantees a place at that school. Check a school’s zone before you commit to a rental or home — see Renting in New Zealand.
- Decile/Equity funding labels have changed over time — judge a school on fit, not a single number.
Domestic vs international student
- Whether your child is a domestic student (state schooling generally free) or an international student (fees apply) depends on your family’s visa/residency status. Confirm this with the school and Immigration NZ.
Settling in
- Schools usually welcome new migrant families; ask about ESOL (English language) support.
