What age can children start taekwondo?
Most Auckland clubs take children from around four to six years old and run separate kids', teens' and adults' classes. Age groups differ by club, so check with the academy directly.
How does the belt system work?
Students move through coloured belts (white, yellow, green, blue, red, then black) by passing a grading test. Black belt ranks (dan, and poom for juniors) are certified by the Kukkiwon in Seoul. Grading timing and any fees vary by club.
Do I need to speak Korean to join?
No. Classes in New Zealand are taught in English, though Korean terminology is used for techniques, counting and commands. The academies listed here have Korean-speaking instructors if you would prefer to ask questions in Korean.
What do I need to bring to a first class?
Usually just comfortable clothes. A dobok (uniform) is generally needed after the first few sessions, and most clubs offer a free or low-cost trial class first. Ask the academy what they supply.
