Explaining a toothache is hard enough in your first language. Doing it in your second, mid-appointment, with someone else’s hands in your mouth, is worse. That’s the case for a Korean-speaking dentist: you can describe symptoms precisely, understand the treatment plan, and ask about costs without guesswork. Auckland is where nearly all of New Zealand’s Korean-speaking dental care is concentrated: of the 20 practices nationwide we could confirm are still trading with a Korean-speaking practitioner, 15 are in Auckland — and the coverage runs from family clinics to orthodontists, denture clinics and oral surgeons. This guide names the clinics we’ve verified, area by area, and explains how New Zealand dental costs actually work and what to confirm before you book.

What Korean dental clinics offer

Most Korean-speaking clinics in Auckland are full general practices: check-ups, hygiene, fillings, root canals, extractions, crowns, and implants. But the specialist end is well covered too:

  • Orthodontics (교정): braces and clear aligners, for teens and adults. Orthodontists are registered dental specialists, a step beyond general dentists.
  • Dentures (틀니): clinical dental technicians make and fit dentures, and some Auckland denture clinics offer consultations in Korean.
  • Oral surgery (구강외과): wisdom-tooth removal and more complex surgical work, usually by referral from a general dentist.
  • Cosmetic dentistry: whitening and veneers are common requests, and clinics used to Korean patients understand the aesthetic being asked for.

A useful thing to know: dentists, dental specialists, and clinical dental technicians are all registered with the Dental Council of New Zealand, and its register is public. If you want to check a practitioner’s registration before booking, you can.

How dental costs work in New Zealand

If you’ve arrived recently, the system is different from Korea’s, and the differences are worth knowing before your first bill:

  • Under 18 is mostly free. Basic dental care (exams, fillings, extractions) is free for most children and teenagers until their 18th birthday through the community oral health service. If you have kids, get them enrolled; it costs nothing.
  • Adults pay privately. There’s no public subsidy for routine adult dental care and no national price list, so fees vary between clinics. For anything beyond a check-up, ask for a written quote before treatment starts. Good clinics expect this question.
  • Help exists if money is tight. Work and Income can cover up to $1,000 in any 52-week period for immediate and essential dental treatment (think fillings, extractions, infection treatment, not check-ups or cleaning). It’s means-tested and doesn’t have to be paid back.
  • Accidents are different. If a tooth is damaged in an accident, at sport, in a fall, ACC may cover some or all of the treatment. The dentist lodges the claim. Damage from biting food, decay, and wear-and-tear aren’t covered, and some treatments need ACC approval before they begin.

Korean dental clinics in Auckland, by area

Korean dental care in Auckland follows the community, so it isn’t spread evenly. Every clinic here is a verified listing in our directory: we confirm the business is real and registered, and each listing page records how we know it’s relevant to Korean speakers, whether that’s the practice stating it, a Korean community directory, or a named Korean-speaking dentist on the practice’s own site. Those aren’t equally strong, so where a clinic’s Korean-language service isn’t established we say so instead of assuming it. How we verify.

North Shore: Albany & Rosedale

The densest cluster by far, with several clinics within a few minutes’ drive of each other.

  • Albany Dental Surgery (알바니 덴탈 서저리) — 231 Dairy Flat Highway, Albany Village, next to the Albany Village Library. Led by Korean-born dentist Dr Soo Min Kim; general, cosmetic and orthodontic work including clear aligners.
  • Smile Dental Albany (스마일 덴탈 알바니) — 119 Apollo Drive, Albany. Part of the Smile Dental group; Korean-born dentist Dr Alice So (BDS, Otago) consults in Korean and English.
  • JJ Dental Care (JJ 치과) — Unit 8A, 331 Rosedale Road, Rosedale. Principal dentist Juna Jung, an Otago graduate with 20+ years across Korea and New Zealand, treats patients in Korean, English and Japanese.
  • Serenity Dental Group (세레니티 이지연 치과) — 43 Apollo Drive, Rosedale. Dr Jean Lee (BDS Otago, FRACDS) is fluent in Korean and English; ACC accident care and free adolescent dental care available.
  • Star Dental (스타 치과) — Unit B/46 Constellation Drive, Rosedale. Family and cosmetic practice with internationally trained dentists and Korean-speaking front-of-house staff.

North Shore: Takapuna & Milford

Takapuna adds general practices plus the specialist end — orthodontics and oral surgery.

  • JJY Dental (윤주혁 치과) — G10/31 Northcroft Street, central Takapuna. Run by general dentists Dr Julius Yoon and Dr Joan Yoon; known in Auckland’s Korean community directories as 윤주혁 치과.
  • The Dental Experts (대니 정 치과) — 38 Barrys Point Road, Takapuna. Check-ups, hygienist care, implants and CEREC same-day restorations, with Korean-speaking dentist Dr Danny Chung (대니 정) on the team.
  • .Ortho Takapuna — 19 Como Street, Takapuna. A specialist orthodontic clinic founded by Korean-born specialist orthodontist Dr Austin Kang; clear aligners, hidden (lingual) braces and traditional braces.
  • NSOMS (임플란트·사랑니 전문의) — Milford. North Shore Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery: implants, wisdom-tooth (사랑니) removal, bone grafting and jaw surgery, with a Korean-speaking contact. Usually by referral from a general dentist.

North Shore: Glenfield & Hillcrest

The older Korean neighbourhoods of the Shore, with long-established family practices and a denture clinic.

  • Dent1st — 438 Glenfield Road, Glenfield. Serving the Shore since 1994; Korean-speaking clinicians Irin Kang (dentist) and Sally Lee (oral health therapist). Covers wisdom teeth surgery, clear aligners and IV sedation.
  • Kim’s Dental Surgery (연세치과) — 1st Floor, 20A Link Drive, Glenfield. Korean-speaking dentist Dr Hyung Kim; general dentistry alongside implants, prosthodontics and orthodontics, with urgent dental care available.
  • JC Denture Clinic (JC 틀니 클리닉) — 32 Sunnybrae Road, Hillcrest. A Korean-speaking denture clinic making and repairing full, partial and immediate dentures, with relines and Work and Income (WINZ) quotes.

Hibiscus Coast

  • Hibiscus Care Dental (히비스커스 케어 덴탈) — 674 Whangaparaoa Road, Stanmore Bay. Opened in 2022 by Dr Spencer Lee and his wife Jayne on a long-established practice site; general, cosmetic and emergency dentistry plus implants, orthodontics and IV sedation.

Central Auckland

  • Re Dental Clinic — 1 Jervois Road, Herne Bay, at the Three Lamps corner. Led by principal dentist Dr Elizabeth Kim, built around gentle, anxiety-aware care across general and cosmetic dentistry.

East & South Auckland

The Shore isn’t the only choice if you live or work elsewhere.

  • Howick Village Denture Studio — Howick. A denture clinic offering consultations and related services, including WINZ documentation support.
  • Drury Dental (드루리 덴탈) — 217 Great South Road, Drury. Part of the Auckland Family Dental group; the team includes Dr Soyeon Oh, a Korean-New Zealand dentist working in cosmetic dentistry, oral surgery and IV sedation for anxious patients.

Also listed, on the North Shore: Miracle Denture Clinic (미라클 덴쳐 크리닉), a denture clinic serving Korean-speaking clients, with a service area given as Shakespeare Road, Milford.

Other Korean-speaking dentists in Auckland

The clinics above are Korean-friendly businesses we’ve verified and list. Separately, a number of mainstream Auckland practices — including national chains — have a Korean-speaking dentist or oral health therapist on the team. They’re not directory listings and we make no claim about the practices themselves, but if none of the clinics above suits your area, these are people you can ask for by name. Source: the dentist.co.nz Korean-language search, checked 14 August 2026, with each practice then checked against Google.

  • Dr Jay Choi — Northmed Dental, 512 East Coast Road, Windsor Park.
  • Dr Stella Lee, specialist periodontist — Institute of Dental Implants & Periodontics, Remuera.
  • Dr Mel Kim — Smile Dental, at Queen Street (CBD), Sylvia Park and Manukau.
  • Dr Ali Han — Smile Dental, at Queen Street (CBD), Takanini and Papakura.
  • Miss Jay Kim, oral health therapist — Lumino The Dentists Auckland Central, and DBS Dental Studio, 55 Corinthian Drive, Albany.
  • Ms Katrina Jung, oral health therapist — The Tooth Company, Smales Farm.

Three things to keep in mind. That source isn’t always current — two more Auckland practices it returns have since closed permanently, and we’ve left them out, so treat any dental directory as a starting point rather than a guarantee. Dentists also move between practices and rotate across branches — several of the names above cover three sites each — so ring and ask for the person, not the clinic. And an oral health therapist does check-ups, cleaning and fillings, but not the full range a dentist does.

Outside Auckland

  • Tui Dental (투이 덴탈) — Te Rapa, Hamilton (three clinics across Te Rapa, Parkwood and Borman). Dr Jeffrey Park consults in Korean and English, and Dr Min-Seong Kim and Dr Eunice Koo also speak Korean.

Beyond our own listings, dentist.co.nz records a Korean-speaking practitioner at just three other places in the entire rest of the country:

  • Wellington & Lower Hutt — Dr Geon Bang, at Supreme Dental Concepts (Tennyson Dental Centre, 32 Lorne Street, Wellington, and 9 Raroa Road, Lower Hutt).
  • Christchurch — Dr Francesca Cho, at Sweet Tooth Dental, 15 Ivory Street, Rangiora, about 23 km north of the city. Nothing is listed in Christchurch itself.
  • Invercargill — Dr Amy Lee, a specialist prosthodontist, at The Dentist on Kelvin, 27 Kelvin Street.

Nothing at all is listed for Tauranga, Dunedin, Nelson, Napier, Whangārei, Rotorua, New Plymouth, Palmerston North or Queenstown. These aren’t directory listings and we make no claim about the practices — only that dentist.co.nz records those practitioners as Korean-speaking (checked 14 August 2026) and that we confirmed each practice is still trading.

Language coverage varies: some clinics have Korean-speaking dentists, others Korean-speaking front-desk staff or hygienists. Confirm what’s available, and on which days, when you book.

Run a Korean-friendly dental clinic we’ve missed, or spotted something out of date? Submit a listing or send a correction — both are free. Browse the full Korean dentists category to filter by suburb.

Before you book

  • Confirm the language. Ask whether a Korean-speaking dentist (not just reception) is available for your appointment, and on which days.
  • Ask for a quote. For anything beyond a check-up, get the treatment plan and cost in writing before you commit.
  • Check registration if you want to. The Dental Council’s public register covers every practising dentist, specialist, and clinical dental technician in New Zealand.
  • Bring your history. If you had recent treatment in Korea, bring X-rays or records if you can; it saves repeating work.
  • In pain now? For urgent advice call Healthline on 0800 611 116 (free, interpreters available). For severe facial swelling or trauma, go to an emergency department.
