Korean-Chinese restaurants in Auckland: jjajangmyeon, jjamppong & more

A jungguk-jip (중국집) is a Korean-Chinese restaurant — not authentic Chinese cuisine, but the Korean take on it, a comfort-food genre of its own. If you grew up in Korea, this is the food you ordered in for a rainy day or a moving day. This is a plain-language guide to what to order, plus where to find it in Auckland.

What to order

• Jjajangmyeon (짜장면). Noodles in a rich black-bean sauce with pork and onion — the signature dish, and the one most people start with.
• Jjamppong (짬뽕). A spicy seafood-and-vegetable noodle soup. Can’t decide between the two? Ask for jjajjammyeon — half and half.
• Tangsuyuk (탕수육). Sweet-and-sour fried pork, the classic shared side. Sauce is usually served on top (buiseo) or on the side (jjigeo) — either is fine to ask for.
• More to share. Many jungguk-jip also do kkanpunggi (깐풍기, crispy chilli chicken), yusanseul, and bokkeumbap (fried rice).

Tips for a first visit

• Delivery and dine-in both work. Jjajangmyeon travels well — it’s the classic takeaway — but tangsuyuk is best fresh at the table.
• Order tangsuyuk to share. It’s made for a group; pair it with a couple of noodle dishes.
• Spice varies. Jjamppong runs hot; ask for a milder version if you’re unsure.
