How it works

• Grill at the table. Order cuts like samgyeopsal (pork belly), galbi (marinated short rib), or bulgogi (thin marinated beef). Staff often help with the grilling.
• Wrap it (ssam). Take a lettuce or perilla leaf, add grilled meat, rice, ssamjang (a savoury paste), and a slice of garlic or chilli.
• Banchan are free & refillable. Kimchi and small side dishes come with the meal — just ask for more.
• Beyond the grill. Many Korean restaurants also do Korean fried chicken, bibimbap, and bubbling stews like kimchi-jjigae and sundubu (soft tofu).

À la carte or all-you-can-eat

Auckland has both styles. À la carte places — the charcoal houses like Gui and Tae Neung — let you order cuts one at a time, which suits a smaller table or a first visit. All-you-can-eat buffets like Daebak, Mukbang, Tombo and Wellbeing give you unlimited marinated and plain meats with banchan, and some pair the grill with hotpot or soup — good value for a hungry group. Buffets often have a time limit, and prices and rules differ by restaurant, so check the venue’s own page first.

• Go with a group — sharing several cuts and stews is half the fun.
• Vegetarian? Look for bibimbap, japchae (glass noodles), and tofu stews.
