Screen golf in Auckland: what it is and where to play

Screen golf (스크린골프) is golf played indoors against a screen. You hit a real ball with a real club, sensors read the strike, and the shot plays out on a simulated version of an actual course. It is a Korean format: indoor bays spread through Seoul until they were about as common as coffee shops, and the technology that made them work was largely built by Korean companies. In Auckland, the venues running it well are mostly Korean-operated, and most of them sit within a few minutes of each other on the North Shore.

This is a plain-language guide to what a bay actually is, who it suits, and which Auckland venues are worth knowing.

How a bay works

• You bring the swing, they bring everything else. A bay is a hitting mat, a screen, and a sensor array. You use real clubs and real balls. Most venues can lend you clubs.
• The sensors do the work. High-speed cameras and launch monitors read ball speed, spin and club path at impact. A slice slices. A running approach runs out. This is why the practice actually transfers.
• A round takes about half as long. Eighteen holes indoors runs closer to two hours than four, with no travel to a course and no waiting on the group ahead.
• It is a group activity. Bays generally take up to four players, and several Auckland venues are licensed, which is why they get booked for birthdays and work functions as much as for practice.
• Weather stops mattering. The whole point. Auckland winters do not cancel a session.

Where to play in Auckland

Two venues do screen golf properly, and both are in Wairau Valley on the North Shore, a few minutes apart.

GOLFixx — Wairau Valley. The strongest coaching bench of the three: a team of professionals holding NZ PGA, KPGA and KLPGA accreditation, several with tour or national-representative history, running private, group, junior and ladies’ lessons. It also offers an official NZ Golf handicap membership, so it is the one to look at if you want your indoor play to count for something. Casual bay hire and memberships both available.

KGOLF — Wairau Valley, a few minutes from GOLFixx. The larger of the two, with eleven bays and a course library well past a hundred. Its academy coaches from swing data and video rather than by eye, and the coaching team is Korean-speaking. It leans social: monthly competitions with prizes, private rooms you can book out, and a licensed lounge doing beer, tapas and snacks with a pool table.

If it is your first time

• Book ahead, especially evenings. Weeknights after work and weekends are when bays fill up.
• Ask about clubs when you book. Loan sets exist almost everywhere, but the range of lofts and lengths varies, and left-handed sets can be thin on the ground.
• Take the data seriously, not personally. Your first session will tell you things about your swing that four years of range balls did not. That is the value.
• If you want a lesson, name the pro. At the venues with several professionals, coaching styles and languages differ. Asking for a specific coach when you book is normal and expected.
• Check rates before you go. Hourly rates, concession blocks, memberships and lesson pricing all move around. Each venue’s own site or Google profile is the reliable source.
