Korean snack food (bunsik) in Auckland: tteokbokki, gimbap & more

Bunsik (분식) is Korea’s snack food — the cheap, comforting street-and-corner-shop staples you grew up on: chewy rice cakes in red sauce, seaweed rice rolls, blood sausage, and crispy fritters. It’s the food of after-school cravings and late-night runs. This is a plain-language guide to what to order, plus how to find it in Auckland.

What to order

• Tteokbokki (떡볶이). Chewy rice cakes simmered in a sweet-spicy gochujang sauce — the centrepiece of any bunsik order. Rabokki adds ramen noodles.
• Gimbap (김밥). Rice and fillings rolled in seaweed and sliced — Korea’s answer to a lunchbox roll. Great to share or take away.
• Sundae (순대). Korean blood sausage, usually served steamed with a sprinkle of salt.
• Twigim (튀김). Assorted fritters — squid, sweet potato, dumplings — perfect dipped in the tteokbokki sauce.
• Ramyeon & more. Many bunsik spots also do instant ramyeon done properly, plus odeng/eomuk (fish cake skewers) in hot broth.

Bunsik in Auckland tends to sit inside Korean restaurants, cafés, and grocery-store food counters rather than dedicated snack bars, so it’s worth browsing the wider Korean dining scene — concentrated in the CBD, along Dominion Road, and on the North Shore.

• Spice is adjustable. Tteokbokki runs sweet-hot; ask for a milder sauce if you’re unsure.
