Korean restaurants in Christchurch: where to eat, by area

Christchurch’s Korean food is smaller than Auckland’s and far more concentrated: almost all of it sits in Riccarton, within walking distance of Westfield and the university. This guide covers the six Korean restaurants in our directory, grouped by what they actually are, because “Korean restaurant” in Christchurch covers a tabletop grill house, a family kitchen, a karaoke bar and a mall chicken counter, and those are very different nights out.

We don’t list hours, menus or prices anywhere on this site: they change too often to keep honest. Each name below links to its page, which links straight out to the restaurant’s own Google profile.

Korean BBQ and sit-down restaurants

• Ye-chon (예촌): 394 Riccarton Road, Upper Riccarton. Hot grills built into the tables for marinated pork belly, beef rib and chicken. Beyond the grill it runs a full comfort-food menu (bulgogi, kimchi fried rice, galbitang and spicy hot pots) with generous banchan. The most complete Korean BBQ experience in the city.
• Korea House (한국관): 6 Nelson Street, Riccarton. Trading since 2000, which makes it the long-runner of the group. The menu covers the most ground of anywhere here: Korean BBQ and bibimbap through to fried chicken, stews, stir-fries, bulgogi, japchae and lotus leaf rice. Start here if you’re ordering for a group with different tastes.
• TJ’s Korean Restaurant: 3 Straven Road, Riccarton. Family-run and home-style: bibimbap, bulgogi and pork bone stew with a generous spread of banchan. The closest thing in Christchurch to eating at a Korean family’s table.

Korean food with drinks and karaoke

• Eden Alley (에덴엘리): 233 Riccarton Road. A Korean restaurant, bar and café with karaoke rooms alongside the dining room. That combination is rare in Christchurch, and it’s the reason to pick it: dinner, drinks and noraebang without moving venue.

Quick Korean: fried chicken and hot dogs

• Seoul Mate Riccarton (서울메이트 리카튼): inside Westfield Riccarton. Chicken gangjeong, the ChiBap fried-chicken rice bowl, and mozzarella hot dogs. The quick end of Korean food rather than a sit-down meal.
• Seoul Mate Northlands (서울메이트 노스랜즈): Langdons Quarter, Northlands Shopping Centre, Papanui. Same menu, and the only Korean restaurant in our Christchurch listings that isn’t in Riccarton, so it’s the one to know if you’re north of the city.

How to plan a night out

• First time? Ye-chon for the grill, or Korea House if you want the widest menu.
• Feeding a mixed group? Korea House, where the range covers grill, rice dishes, stews and chicken.
• Want it to turn into a night? Eden Alley, for the karaoke rooms.
• Between classes or shopping? Either Seoul Mate.
• Sunday-night comfort food? TJ’s, for the home-style stews and banchan.

Korean restaurants often close between lunch and dinner, and small kitchens keep their own hours, so check the Google profile on each page before you drive over.

Every business on this page was assessed for Korean ownership or Korean-language service before we listed it, in most cases by checking the directors of the registered New Zealand company behind the business. A Korean-sounding name, or a Korean dish on the menu, isn’t enough on its own.

Christchurch has other places serving Korean food that we haven’t listed, either because we couldn’t confirm who owns them or because we simply haven’t got to them yet. We’d rather leave a gap than publish a guess. If you know one, tell us.
